Congratulations to Pete who placed 11th (out of 29) in the Cat 4 Summit Center general classification. He earned this high finish by excelling in the 6.5 mile, 2000' gain Snow Bowl Hill Climb with a top 10 finish (7th place). He was riding with the leaders until the very end and got to watch the race unfold in front of him. It was a great effort at high altitude (7-9k'). He rounded out his second day with a 15th place road race finish and was burning matches to the end when him and I were trying to launch him from the peloton with 2 miles to go. The peloton was able to shut the attempt down but OPV was on the front nearing the final turn to the 1.5 mile climb.
I ended up finishing mid-pack with a 13th place overall GC finish. The hill climb didn’t unfold like I expected it to. I was riding second wheel partway into the race when I lost concentration and started to quickly slide back to mid pack. Knowing that points were only awarded 11 deep, I decided to go into conservation mode in hopes for a better showing in the road race. I ended up 25th after the first day of racing but was able to spring back for my own top ten finish on day two coming in 9th.
Pete and I both agree it is one of the most scenic races in AZ and it was nice to get out of the heat. It was very interesting to watch the peloton dynamics as the big teams in contention for the overall GC lead (Summit & Procon) let solo breakaways materialize and go all in for attempted wins - definitely something to note for next year.
